Policies
Student Code of Conduct
Dunwoody holds each student accountable for his or her individual behavior as it relates to the freedom, rights, and safety of others or as it affects the learning atmosphere of the school. Unacceptable behavior may be a basis for termination of enrollment. Dunwoody encourages and expects honesty and integrity in its employees and students. No form of cheating or harassment of any kind will be tolerated.
Disruptive Student Behavior
It is prohibited for students to inhibit, interfere with, obstruct or damage academic activities at Dunwoody.
Disruptive behavior is any behavior unbecoming of a student at Dunwoody, either in or out of the classroom. Examples include, but are not limited to, refusing to turn off pagers and cell phones, spitting, cracking knuckles, unauthorized or excessive noise or failure to comply with college directives.
When improper student conduct is observed, the student will be asked to stop the behavior. If the behavior continues, the student may be asked to leave the classroom(s) and/or the campus.
Drug and Alcohol Policy
Drug and alcohol abuse affects the health, safety, and well-being of all students and restricts Dunwoody’s ability to carry out its mission. Dunwoody prohibits the possession, use, or distribution of illegal drugs, narcotics, and alcohol on school property or as part of any school activity. If a student comes to school while under the influence of such drugs, that student will not be admitted to class and his or her enrollment may be terminated.
Tobacco-Free Environment
The use of all forms of tobacco, including chewing tobacco, is prohibited at Dunwoody according to the Minnesota Clean Indoor Air Act except in designated areas. Designated smoking areas must be located 25 feet from entrances, exits, windows and ventilation intakes. Dunwoody’s designated areas are near the west entrance and the north entrance of the main building as well as the west entrance on the lower level of the Warren Building. Violation of the tobacco regulation is cause for dismissal.
Sanctions for Drug and Alcohol Policy Violations
Students who violate Dunwoody’s policy against illegal drugs, narcotics, and alcohol are subject to discipline. Students must also be aware that there are significant criminal penalties under state and federal law for the unlawful possession or distribution of drugs and alcohol. Penalties include prison terms, property forfeiture and fines.
Sanctions for violation of Dunwoody’s Drug and Alcohol Policy include:
1. Removal from class or lab
2. Warning and admonition
3. Confiscation of the illegal substance
4. Completion of an appropriate treatment or rehabilitation program
5. Probation and/or suspension or expulsion.
Sanctions will reflect the severity of a particular violation. Referral for criminal prosecution may also occur.
Drug and Alcohol Education and Treatment Programs
Dunwoody recognizes drug and alcohol dependency/abuse as a major health problem, as well as a safety and security problem. If you have a drug or alcohol problem or know of another student with such a problem, please consult the School Counselor in the Pinska Student Services Center. This counselor is able to provide short-term counseling and referral to a variety of public and private educational and treatment programs in the state and metropolitan areas. The student may remain in school during counseling or return to school following treatment if full-time treatment is required. Federal law requires that any information obtained by doctors, psychologists or drug treatment centers from clients or patients remain confidential.
Emergency Procedures
Evacuation route directions are strategically placed throughout the school. The last person to exit a room must be sure to close the door upon leaving. The evacuation signal is a siren-like sound. Move quickly to the nearest exit, but do not run. In the event of a fire, smell of smoke or other emergency, activate the nearest building alarm box and immediately report the danger at the Pinska Student Services Center.
