Instructor – English and Reading

Dunwoody College of Technology currently has the need for a full time instructor within the Gateway program.  This instructor will be responsible for teaching English and Reading classes and to provide research based developmental education classes and academic programming to support student success in technical college programs.  In addition, this position requires support of technical program faculty in implementing instructional support, which is needed to help student’s master program content.

Successful candidate will have the ability to assess the learning deficiencies of students and plan, implement and evaluate appropriate individualized programs to correct deficiencies.

MAJOR OBJECTIVE
This position is responsible for initiating the teaching and learning process with a focus on continuous improvement; creating an environment in which students can accomplish the learning objectives of the course of instruction; designing and developing new curriculum.  The result should be students’ ability to demonstrate the knowledge, skills, ethics, and use of proper tools to meet industry and professional business standards.

ACCOUNTABILITIES

  • Assess the learning deficiencies of students and develop individualized learning programs for academic improvement.
  • Maintain student profile data from individual skill sessions.
  • Write departmental reports related to academic activities.
  • Attend student and faculty meetings
  • Attend educational development conferences on and off campus.
  • Facilitates learning activities so that students learn the principles, theory, skills, and work ethic necessary to become proficient for entry level positions.
  • Creates a positive learning environment.
  • Monitors, assesses and advises learner on technical and academic progress and performance.
  • Uses current academic and industry practices in assigned courses of instruction.
  • Develops and upgrades lesson material, training aids and maintains equipment within assigned course of instruction.
  • Assists in the recruitment and placement of learners.
  • Other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s in secondary English, Reading or Special Education required with a Master’s degree preferred
  • 3-5 years professional teaching experience in related field.
  • Ability to plan, direct and manage reading instruction for students reading below college level.
  • Ability to plan and implement instruction for pre-college English classes reviewing basic writing, grammar and mechanics.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Ability to use online resources to support the management and delivery of instruction.
  • Ability to maintain effective working relationships with others.
  • Ability to express self clearly and concisely both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to operate personal computer, audio visual equipment and other office equipment.
  • Ability to work 40 hours per week.
