The Career
Heating and cooling occupations are commonly classified as residential,
commercial or industrial. Workers find meaningful jobs as shop workers,
erectors, installers and servicers. They must be competent in pattern
development and setup, in addition to the operation of fabricating machinery.
They must also be able to read blueprints, electrical schematics and layout
patterns, and to fabricate fittings. They must be physically sound and fairly
strong; finally, they must be able to climb and work from scaffolds or ladders.
The Program
The Heating and Cooling Systems program provides students with entry-level
skills and theoretical knowledge in pattern-making, fabricating, and installing
heating and air conditioning systems for residential and commercial structures.
The servicing component of the program includes troubleshooting and repair
for residential and light commercial systems. In addition to field-related
skills, students gain oral and written communication skills, computer literacy,
advanced computation skills, and critical-thinking skills through Arts and
Sciences and technical course work.
Program Length
Graduates of this six-quarter program earn a diploma or Associate of Applied
Science (A.A.S.) degree, depending on the Arts and Sciences courses
completed. Students with previous training or experience in the occupation
may arrange to take selected courses of the program. There is also a Sheet
Metal Dunwoody Certificate available.
