The Career
Electrical Construction and Maintenance graduates install, maintain and
repair building electrical systems and are employed by electrical contractors,
private plants, mining companies, electrical wholesalers and manufacturers
of electrical equipment. They also install and maintain electro-mechanical,
security and other electrical equipment. Many eventually establish their own
businesses. Estimating and sales offer other opportunities for employment.
The Program
The Electrical Construction and Maintenance program provides students
with entry-level employment skills and knowledge in electrical fundamentals,
motor and control, power generation and distribution, programmable
controllers and industrial controls. Residential, commercial and industrial
wiring techniques are covered and students gain a working knowledge
of the National Electrical Code (NEC). Students enrolling in this program
should have good math skills and reasoning ability. Upon completion of this
course, entry-level graduates may be employed as apprentice maintenance
electricians, apprentice construction electricians, panel builders, low-voltage
installers and estimators.
Program Length
Graduates of this six-quarter program earn a diploma (104 credits) or
Associate of Applied Science (A.A.S.) degree (118 credits), depending
on the Arts and Sciences course work completed. Students with previous
training or experience in the occupation may arrange to take selected
courses in the program.
