Electrical Construction Design and Management (ECDM)
Program Fact Sheet/Courses (pdf file) | e-mail program
The Career
Electrical construction designers create electrical systems for residential,
commercial and industrial buildings using computers and Computer
Aided Drafting (CAD) software. Cost estimation, project scheduling, and
management of fabrication and installation are also key to this career.
Electrical designers and managers are employed by architectural firms,
consulting engineering firms, electrical contractors, and in product sales
and support.
The Program
The Electrical Construction Design and Management program is designed
to provide the knowledge and skills necessary for entry-level employment.
Instruction begins with electrical fundamentals: electrical theories and
principles, analysis and calculation, and drafting and layout. The second
year builds a foundation by adding detailed design skills, CAD, cost
estimation and project management. Designers learn crucial problemsolving
skills as they advance through the program. Students begin with
basic electrical theory and application, and progress to motor controls,
electrical installations, power systems design, and lighting and safety
systems. The National Electrical Code (NEC) is studied extensively.
Quarterly projects integrate all aspects of electrical layout and build upon
the skills acquired in the Arts and Sciences courses.
Program Length
Graduates of this six-quarter program earn an Associate of Applied Science
(A.A.S.) degree.
