Buhler Apprentices/Dunwoody students showcase robotic machines

Buhler apprentices/Dunwoody students Matt Stumm, Austin Carline, Andrew Hohn, Mike Schweizer and Virgina Pearson celebrated the end of their final class module during a student showcase event on campus Feb. 23.

Students were able to demonstrate the robotic machines they have spent the last few classes designing, assembling, and programming. The group also displayed several robotic parts that were designed and printed on the College’s Stratasys 3D printer.

The group will finish their final segment of the apprenticeship program by continuing to work towards full-time positions at Buhler.

Industry partner Graco donates InvisiPac system to Dunwoody’s Robotics & Manufacturing department

Students work with the new Graco InvisiPac system in Dunwoody's packaging lab. Graco recently donated an InvisiPac hot melt glue machine — one of its’ latest technologies — to Dunwoody’s Robotics & Manufacturing department. The InvisiPac donation came about as the result of a visit late last year by Graco Engineering Manager Mark Weinberger.

During the visit “one of the students told me about the working assembly lines at Dunwoody that included glue machines,” Weinberger explained. After looking over the assembly line, he approached Senior Instructor Jeff Bixby about replacing the old glue machine with the InvisiPac.

Graco InvisiPac gives students hands-on, industry-standard experience

Automated Systems & Robotics students use the Graco InvisiPac hot melt glue machine for sealing cartons after an MGS Cartoner fills them in Dunwoody’s packaging lab. The automated packaging line then uses these cartons to demonstrate a “product to pallet” approach to machine troubleshooting.

By replacing the older glue machine with Graco’s InvisiPac, students will have hands-on experience with the latest tools currently being used in their field. The InvisiPac is one of the newest technologies to come from Graco and sets a standard for state-of-the-art packaging plants. Here are just a few of the upgrades that students will benefit from:

  • The Graco InvisiPack system works with the MGS Cartoner to fill cartons in Dunwoody's packaging lab. Graco’s InvisiPac is ready to use in 10 minutes versus 35-60 minutes for the older system.
  • It has a superior hose design that minimizes glue charring.
  • Its’ applicators have plug-free modules, eliminating unplanned assembly line downtime.
  • The InvisiPac has an easy-to-use high-tech display, along with glue use tracking and reporting with wireless connectivity.

Graco serves as a great industry partner

In addition to their recent donation, Graco has also supported Dunwoody students by providing internship opportunities and job placement after graduation.

“Two recent hires, Jake Whiteoak and Justin Weldon work in my division.  They both worked as interns for Graco before graduating last year.  Jake and Justin are doing excellent work.  We appreciate Dunwoody’s willingness to allow their students to work as interns,” Weinberger said.  “This is valuable experience for both Graco and the students.”

Associate Director of Career Services Rob Borchardt noted that Graco hired five Dunwoody graduates just last year in addition to hosting several interns.

Students travel to Orlando, FL for 2016 ASHRAE Winter Conference, AHR Expo

More than 2,000 manufacturers and 60,000 Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning and Refrigeration (HVACR) professionals attend the AHR event each year.

ASHRAE Conference, AHR Expo shapes students into valuable employees

Taft said the annual conference and expo are especially beneficial to students pursuing a career in HVACR.

At the events, Kristofer and Jack were able to:

  • Participate in educational presentations, seminars, panels and workshops
  • Learn how to navigate through everyday HVAC engineering and design issues
  • Network with industry professionals and ASHRAE YEA (Young Engineers in ASHRAE) members
  • Hear about the industry’s latest awards, grants and competitions
  • Examine new HVAC equipment, products and technologies from internationally recognized manufacturers

“When students have the opportunity to attend these events, they see the reality of where the HVAC industry is, where it’s going, and what they need to do to become sought-out professionals following graduation,” Taft said.

“The knowledge they gain from experiencing nationally-recognized industry events will make them more valuable employees.”

Dunwoody students appreciate learning outside the classroom

Photo of Dunwoody students discussing with other engineering studentsTaft said one of the student’s favorite parts of the trip was participating in the various events offered during the ASHRAE Student Program on Jan 24.

Through the program, Kristofer and Jack—who are both members of Dunwoody’s ASHRAE Student Chapter—were introduced to students from other HVAC programs across the country. Taft said his students appreciated learning how other students were also studying HVAC engineering concepts.

This is the fifth year Dunwoody students have attended the event, thanks to financial assistance from the Minnesota ASHRAE Chapter. In 2015, students traveled to Chicago, IL for the conference. The 2017 event will be held in Las Vegas, NV.

Heating & Air Conditioning Engineering Technology student receives $2,000 ASHRAE Scholarship

This past summer, representatives from American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) hand-delivered a $2,000 scholarship check to Dunwoody employees. The check was to be awarded at the start of spring semester to a student who showed promise of a successful career in the HVAC&R field.

Dunwoody is pleased to announce that the chosen recipient for the 2016 spring semester ASHRAE scholarship is second-year student Matt Svihel.

Svihel—who is set to graduate this May—says it is a great feeling to be rewarded for his hard work here at Dunwoody.

Svihel has a 3.83 grade point average (GPA) and is an active member in Dunwoody’s ASHRAE student chapter.

Two Surveying students benefit from tuition scholarships awarded by VAA

Jake Blue and Brandon Davis are celebrating their recent scholarship awards from long-time Dunwoody College industry partner Van Sickle, Allen & Associates (VAA).

The scholarships—put towards the student’s 2016 spring semester’s tuition—are valued at $2,000 a piece.

The application process

For the past several years, VAA, an engineering, planning and design company, has allocated money specifically for two Dunwoody student scholarships. The scholarships—offered to students in the Architectural Drafting & Design, Surveying & Civil Engineering Technology, Heating & Air Conditioning Engineering Technology and Electrical Construction Design & Management programs—are competitive and require interested students to draft a personal essay, submit a letter of recommendation, and complete an in-person interview with a panel of Dunwoody and VAA employees.

Applicants are then evaluated on academic achievement, school and community activities and work experience. The recipients must have a grade point average (GPA) of 3.2 or higher.

 This year’s recipients include Jake and Brandon, both second year Surveying & Civil Engineering students, who say they couldn’t be happier with the results.

“Winning this scholarship is a wonderful reward for the hard work I have put into my schooling, “ Jake said. “It gives me confidence in the skills I have gained at Dunwoody.”

Jake—who’s pursuing his second professional degree at the College– has a 4.0 GPA and is a member of Phi Theta Kappa and Dunwoody’s Survey Club. Currently, he is a self-employed production arborist.

“As a self-employed student,” he said, “this scholarship is extremely helpful. It will allow me to work less and focus more on my school work.”

Jake plans to seek employment in the Civil Engineering field upon graduation.

Brandon, who’s currently a student worker at the Minnesota Department of Transportation, says this scholarship will also help him “make ends meet.”

“It’s a great feeling to know that there are people or organizations out there that are willing to sacrifice some of their financial security to help individuals who have found themselves in financial need,” he said.

Brandon is the fundraising officer for Engineers Without Borders and president of both the Dunwoody Surveying Club and the Multicultural Club.

Upon graduation, Brandon hopes to become a professional surveyor.

Construction Management program receives $60,000 grant

Dunwoody College of Technology is thrilled to announce the Construction Management program has received a $60,000 grant from the National Housing Endowment Foundation’s Homebuilding Education Leadership Program (HELP).

The National Housing Endowment is a philanthropic arm of the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB), which aims to increase education and training opportunities for future leaders in the residential construction industry. HELP awards grants to leading colleges and universities in an effort to create or improve residential construction management programs.

“We applied for the grant because we did not have a strong residential construction focus in the classroom,” said Heather Gay, Construction Management Program Manager. “As a result, students weren’t going into the residential field. There was an interest, but we just didn’t have that knowledge in the classroom. This grant, and our program’s recent faculty hires, will change that.”

Specifically, the $60,000 donation will be used to:

  • Train faculty and students to be Certified Aging in Place Specialists (CAPS) and Certified Green Professionals (CGP).
  • Enhance relationships with industry through organized site visits, a lecture series, and various guest speakers/presentations.
  • Increase admissions outreach by targeting high school students in residential construction classes or skilled trades people looking to advance in their career.

Gay said that the outreach plans and any success stories will also be shared with other interested colleges. Gay as well as members of HELP hope that this form of open dialogue will encourage collaboration among all colleges with a residential construction program.

Klein Tools provides supplies to Electrical Construction & Maintenance program, awards student with Outstanding Graduate Award

As Dunwoody students and employees gear up for spring semester, the College would like to take a moment to congratulate our December graduates as well as thank an important donor and partner, Molly Kujawa from Klein Tools.

“Molly has been involved with the electrical department for about seven or eight years now,” said Electrical Construction & Maintenance Principal Instructor Karen Schmitt.

“She always comes through when helping our students. On several occasions, she has provided me with experts who have demonstrated and presented to our class; when I have had students who couldn’t afford something, she is always very quick to help.”

In addition to assisting students, Kujawa also frequently donates tools and materials to the program. Just recently, the Electrical Construction & Maintenance program received several multimeters; numerous low voltage test kits and low voltage hand tools; and multiple display boards.

Klein Tools recognizes Fall 2015 Outstanding Graduate

Each semester, Klein Tools also recognizes an Outstanding Program Graduate. The award is given to a graduating student who has gone above and beyond during his or her time at Dunwoody.

For the fall semester, Max Orman was the chosen recipient.

“Max has proven to be an exemplary example of what we expect of our students,” Schmitt said. “In addition to a very good GPA, he has had great attendance and an excellent work ethic.”

During Orman’s final class at Dunwoody, Kujawa surprised him with a $150 meter; a rare, etched pair of linesman pliers; and the Top Graduate award signed by the owner of Klein Tools.

Orman graduated with an Associate’s Degree in Electrical Construction & Maintenance last month. He was recently accepted into IBEW Local 292, the Minneapolis electrical union.

CFMA continues history of Dunwoody-giving, awards Construction Management student with scholarship

Construction Management student and CFMA scholarship winner Justin Brastad The Construction Financial Management Association (CFMA)—a nonprofit organization devoted to enhancing the education of today’s construction financial professionals—has awarded its fourth Dunwoody scholarship to Construction Management student Justin Brastad.

The CFMA has a long history of giving to the College, awarding Dunwoody with multiple student scholarships and a generous endowed scholarship over the last several years.

CFMA’s support goes beyond financial assistance

“The goal of the scholarship program is to promote accounting, finance and management careers in the construction industry,” CFMA Scholarship Chairperson Michael Michelsen said. “It is our intent to improve the perception of the value and impact that a career in construction can have for both the industry and the individual.”

The giving doesn’t stop there: members of the CFMA Twin Cities have also joined the College’s Program Advisory Committee; participated in student capstone presentations; and have conducted several presentations to Dunwoody classes, focusing on topics like construction risk management and cash flow management.

Scholarship provides tuition relief for Justin

Justin, a Junior this year, says receiving this scholarship means a great deal to him.

“Being a college student and full-time employee is a huge task in itself,” he said. “On top of that, trying to pay for college and books can be overwhelming. I am very grateful for this scholarship and am honored to have been the one selected to receive it.”

The award will be put towards Justin’s remaining tuition at Dunwoody. Upon graduation, Justin hopes to become a Construction Estimator.

“I am on the right path to do so, but have a lot of learning to do,” he said. “I want to continue to grow and see how far I can push myself in industry. Wherever that takes me, I will be happy. I just want to be able to make a difference.”
